are your goals just not working out?
In the pursuit of our goals, there may come a time when we find ourselves at a crossroads, faced with the realization that our current path isn’t leading us to the desired outcomes. It is during these moments that we must summon the courage to embrace change and pivot towards a new direction. While perseverance is commendable, it is equally important to recognize when a different approach is needed. In this article, we will explore the power of acknowledging failure, understanding the opportunity cost, and taking intentional steps to change course. By doing so, we can navigate our journey towards success with clarity, resilience, and fulfillment.
Repeated failures or discontentment can demonstrate that something just isn’t quite right for us. Maybe we’re not playing to our greatest strengths, or competing in something that is too oversaturated, or maybe our soul just wasn’t meant for a certain path. Sometimes life intervenes and steers us away from what we think we want so that we can have what we are truly meant for. Knowing when it’s time to pivot and change course is an act of strength – not weakness – that can save us years of anguish and disappointment.
Before you get to this point of changing your course, make sure you’ve truly given your goal your best effort. Sometimes other life factors such as relationships, stress, or mental health get in the way of your goals, and you’ll need to direct your attention elsewhere for a little while. This is a normal part of any journey, so be sure this isn’t the reason you’ve decided to pivot. When your determined, most focused self has tried at something and failed a few times, then it’s time to reassess.
If you find yourself in a situation where your goals aren’t working out, it’s important to determine the root cause. Are the repeated failures due to factors within your control, such as not playing to your strengths or not being in a suitable environment, or is it something outside of your control like the economy or other people’s actions? Once identified, it’s time to be honest with yourself about whether it’s worth continuing down the current path or if it’s time to pivot and try something new.
opportunity cost
Changing your direction can be scary, especially if you’ve invested a lot of time and effort into your current path. But it’s important to remember that pivoting doesn’t mean giving up or admitting defeat. Instead, it’s an act of strength to acknowledge when something isn’t working and to have the courage to make a change.
To determine whether it’s time to pivot or stay the course, consider the opportunity cost of the situation. In economics, opportunity cost refers to the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.

In economics and in life, this is a simple way to determine what you might be giving up if you proceed on a particular path. In finance, you would determine opportunity cost by subtracting the return of option B from the return of option A. Since life choices can’t always be quantified in numbers, here are some questions to ask yourself to determine the opportunity cost of your choice:
- What am I giving up to pursue this option?
- How much energy am I directing towards this goal, and might it be better spent elsewhere?
- What else could I do if I weren’t on this path?
By pivoting and trying something new, you may be able to capitalize on your strengths and passions in a way that wasn’t possible before. It may lead to unexpected opportunities and a greater sense of fulfillment. Remember, it’s never too late to make a change when you’re not happy with your current situation or are facing repeated failures.
how to change your direction
Changing direction can be intimidating, particularly when we have invested significant time and effort into our current endeavors. However, it is crucial to remember that pivoting is not a sign of failure but an act of strength and courage. Here are some steps to guide you through the process of pivoting:
- Acknowledge the situation: Recognize that your current goals aren’t working out and that it’s time to reassess and consider making a change. Remember that admitting it to yourself when it’s not working out is an act of strength.
- Determine the root cause of the failure: Consider if the failure is due to factors within your control, such as not playing to your strengths or not being in a suitable environment, or if it’s something outside of your control like the economy or other people’s actions.
- Evaluate your options: Consider alternative paths you could take and explore potential opportunities that align with your strengths, passions, and values. Think about other avenues you might take if you weren’t so focused on your current goal.
- Consider the opportunity cost: Determine what you might be giving up if you proceed on a particular path. Ask yourself what you are giving up to pursue your current option, how much energy are you directing towards your goal, and what else could you do if you weren’t on this path.
- Make a plan: Once you’ve identified an alternative path, create a plan that includes specific steps or milestones to move you towards your goal. Oftentimes what you’ve learned so far on your journey will give you a head start on your new goal. For example, when I changed majors in college, the credits I had taken for my first major counted as electives for the degree I ultimately earned. If you’re changing careers, know that many of your skills are likely transferable to your new path.
- Take action: Don’t be afraid to take the leap and start taking action towards your new goal. Remember to be patient and stay committed, as significant changes require time and effort to come to fruition.
It’s important to engage in self-reflection during this process. Take the time to deeply understand your values, passions, and long-term aspirations. This introspective journey will provide valuable insights into what truly matters to you and guide your decision-making when considering a change in direction. Additionally, seek support from trusted friends, mentors, or professionals. Having a support system can offer guidance, encouragement, and a sounding board for exploring new possibilities and overcoming challenges.
Flexibility and adaptability are key as you navigate through this transition. Embrace the notion that the journey towards success and fulfillment rarely follows a linear path. Be open to adjusting your goals and plans as new opportunities or obstacles arise. Remember that failure is not an endpoint but rather a necessary part of the journey towards success. Extract lessons from your setbacks and view them as stepping stones towards personal growth and resilience.
Throughout this process, practice patience and perseverance. Changing direction and pursuing new goals takes time and effort. Stay committed to your new path, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks. Success rarely happens overnight, but with resilience and determination, you can navigate through challenges and make progress towards your new vision.
Remember, you have the power to change your direction and create a life that aligns with your true passions and values – even in the face of repeated failures. Embrace the journey, and with patience and perseverance, you’ll discover the fulfillment and happiness you seek.
embracing the unknown
When we pivot and try something new, we embark on a journey filled with uncertainty and growth. It is important to remember that repeated failures and discontentment are often catalysts for personal and professional development. By recognizing when a change is needed and having the courage to embrace it, we open ourselves up to unforeseen opportunities and a renewed sense of fulfillment.
Change is an inevitable and constant part of life. It can be intimidating, challenging, and often pushes us out of our comfort zones. However, embracing change is essential for personal growth, self-discovery, and creating a fulfilling life. By welcoming change with an open mind and a positive attitude, we can unlock new opportunities, expand our horizons, and reach our true potential.
Change has the potential to be a catalyst for transformation, both internally and externally. Here, we will explore how embracing change can lead to personal and professional development, enhance resilience, and create a life that aligns with our authentic selves.
- Growth and Personal Development: Change provides us with opportunities to learn, grow, and evolve as individuals. It pushes us to step outside our comfort zones and acquire new skills, knowledge, and perspectives. By embracing change, we open ourselves up to personal development and self-improvement, which can lead to increased confidence, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
- Resilience and Adaptability: Change or repeated failures often bring uncertainty and challenges, but it also presents an opportunity to build resilience and adaptability. Embracing change allows us to develop the skills and mindset needed to navigate through life’s ups and downs. It teaches us how to bounce back from setbacks, face adversity with courage, and find creative solutions to unexpected situations. By embracing change, we become more resilient and better equipped to handle future challenges.
- Creating an Authentic and Fulfilling Life: Change can inspire us to reevaluate our priorities, values, and goals. It provides a chance to realign our lives with our true passions and aspirations. By embracing change, we give ourselves permission to let go of what no longer serves us and embrace new paths that align with our authentic selves. This process can lead to a more fulfilling and purpose-driven life, where our actions and choices are in harmony with our core values.
- Embracing Opportunities and Uncertainty: Change often brings new opportunities that we may not have considered before. By embracing change, we open ourselves up to possibilities and experiences that can enrich our lives and lead to personal and professional growth. Embracing change also means accepting uncertainty and being comfortable with the unknown. It allows us to embrace the beauty of unpredictability, embrace new experiences, and cultivate a sense of adventure.
When I’ve had to change my direction due to repeated failures or another unforeseen circumstance, I’ve heard the words of one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost, echoed in my mind:

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Ultimately, knowing when to change course after repeated failures is about being honest with yourself and being willing to take a risk. It’s an act of strength that can lead to greater happiness and success in the long run. Don’t be afraid to pivot, because sometimes the greatest rewards come from taking a new and unexpected path. It could result in unknown opportunities and a sense of fulfillment. You have the freedom to make a change regardless of your current circumstance.
