Endlessly Versatile Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Craft the perfect pulled pork effortlessly with this slow cooker recipe that promises tender, flavorful meat adaptable to your desired taste palette.

Easy, Economical, and Delicious

I love pork. It’s so much more affordable than beef or seafood, leaner than most meats, and it can be just as delicious if you know how to prepare it right. I think pork gets a bad rep because of the Shake ‘n Bake overcooked pork chop days. We used to think that pork had to be practically burnt and completely dried out to be safe to eat, but now we know that’s no longer the case.

Even so, if you’re still freaked out about the idea of medium-rare pork tenderloins (my favorite!), don’t fret – this recipe makes the juiciest, most melt-in-your-mouth pork completely hands-off in your slow cooker, and we cook it completely low and slow.

Pork is often underrated, but it’s truly a versatile and flavorful meat. Its unique taste and tender texture make it a wonderful addition to a variety of dishes. Beyond taste, it’s packed with essential nutrients like protein, thiamine, selenium, and zinc, among others.

When it comes to pulled pork, the slow cooker is its best friend. This method of cooking ensures that every fiber of the pork is infused with flavor, resulting in an incredibly succulent and tender meat. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity — just set it and forget it! It’s perfect for a weeknight dinner when you just don’t have the time for chopping veggies and searing meats.

The versatility of slow cooker pulled pork is unmatched. Once cooked, it becomes the perfect canvas for a multitude of dishes. Serve it on soft buns for classic sandwiches, add it to tacos with vibrant toppings, or create nourishing bowls loaded with your favorite ingredients. The possibilities are endless, making it an ideal choice for feeding a crowd or prepping meals for the week.

WHat Are You Waiting for? Let’s Get Cooking.

To start, this slow cooker pulled pork recipe keeps it simple in terms of seasoning. A blend of basic herbs like garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, oregano, and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper lays the foundation for a well-rounded flavor profile. These neutral flavors ensure that the pork can easily adapt to various cuisines or personal tastes.

After generously seasoning the pork shoulder with this flavorful mix, it’s time for the magic of the slow cooker. Set the cooker to low and let time do its work. As the pork simmers gently for hours, the aromas will permeate your kitchen, teasing your taste buds with anticipation.

By the time it’s ready, the meat will practically fall apart with tenderness. Use two forks to effortlessly shred the pork, allowing it to soak up all those delicious juices in the slow cooker. This juicy, melt-in-your-mouth pork is now a blank canvas, ready to be paired with your favorite sauces, spices, or herbs to suit any palate or culinary style.

Whether you’re a fan of tangy barbecue sauce, zesty citrus flavors, or bold seasonings, this slow cooker pulled pork provides the perfect canvas for customization. Tailor it to your liking or leave it as is — it’s bound to be a crowd-pleaser either way.

This recipe serves plenty, so if you’re not feeding a family of 10 or an army, I like to freeze leftovers in a large, gallon-sized bag. Then, using the back of a knife, indent a grid into the pork so it can be easily broken apart when defrosting. Then, you can pop a square into the microwave and use later for tacos, as a ramen topping, and more.

Equipment

  • 1 slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 3-5 pounds pork shoulder or butt boneless
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Begin by seasoning the pork shoulder generously with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper, ensuring an even coating on all sides.
  • Place the seasoned pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
  • Set the slow cooker to low and allow the pork to cook for 7-9 hours (depending on the weight of your pork shoulder), or until the meat is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  • Once done, use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces. Let rest for 20 minutes, allowing the shredded pork to soak up the flavorful juices. This creates a much juicer, flavorful end result.
  • Serve the succulent pulled pork on sandwiches, tacos, in bowls, or any preferred way. It serves as a versatile base that can be customized with various sauces or seasonings according to taste preferences (see notes for ideas!).

Notes

  • Searing the meat beforehand isn’t necessary as slow cooking allows the pork to tenderize and absorb flavors effectively. Searing might result in the loss of juices and doesn’t significantly enhance the taste.
  • The pork shoulder contains ample fat that will render during cooking, eliminating the need to add additional oil or butter.
  • To create various flavor profiles:
    • For a citrus twist: Add orange or lime zest, along with a splash of orange or lime juice during the cooking process for a bright and tangy flavor.
    • For spicy tacos: Incorporate chipotle peppers in adobo sauce or sprinkle some red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to infuse heat and smokiness.
    • For a savory and herby profile: Enhance with fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or sage. Additionally, consider adding a touch of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce for depth.
Experiment with different seasonings or sauces to customize the pulled pork according to personal taste preferences or the desired dish. These flavor modifications will complement a wide range of culinary styles, from Mexican-inspired tacos to classic American BBQ dishes.
