The Skincare Routine That Genuinely Changed My Life

In this article, I’ll share the skincare routine that transformed my acne-prone, combination skin and boosted my confidence after years of struggling.

My Lifelong Struggle with Acne

For as long as I can remember, my skin has been a source of frustration and insecurity. As a teenager, I battled relentless acne, clogged pores, and the maddening combination of oily yet dry skin. No matter what I tried—drugstore cleansers, DIY remedies, or even prescription treatments—my skin always seemed to have a mind of its own.

I always assumed I would grow out of it. “Teenage acne,” they said. But as I grew older, those bumps didn’t disappear. In fact, by the time I hit 26, my skin was worse than ever. Shifting hormones seemed to bring a fresh wave of breakouts, and I was desperate for answers. I convinced myself that maybe it was my diet, cutting out foods I loved in hopes of seeing a difference. I experimented with every trendy product and regimen under the sun, but nothing worked.

I became an expert at hiding it. Thick layers of makeup became my armor, concealing every blemish and red spot. But beneath it all, I was still painfully self-conscious. I avoided close-ups, ducked out of group selfies, and dreaded seeing myself in videos where no filter could hide the truth. My skin felt like a constant barrier between me and the confidence I craved.

But then, I found the routine. And everything changed.

In this post, I’ll share the transformative skincare steps that not only cleared my skin but also restored my confidence. If you’re feeling stuck, like I once did, I hope my journey inspires you to find what works for you. It’s never too late to feel good in your own skin.

The Game-Changing Trip to Ulta

After years of battling my skin and trying every drugstore brand you could name—and even a few higher-end brands like Clinique—nothing seemed to work. I’d even spent upwards of $40 a month on prescription Curology treatments, hoping for a miracle that never came. Frustrated and determined to find something, anything that could help, I headed to Ulta. This time, I thought I might have to bite the bullet and spend big bucks on skincare.

I wandered the aisles for what felt like ages, debating whether to splurge on a $200+ lineup from Tula. The branding was tempting, and I was almost convinced that this hefty investment might finally be the answer. But just before draining my wallet, I decided to look around one last time—and that’s when I saw it: The Ordinary.

The clean, simple packaging stood out immediately. Unlike most skincare products that boast names like “Acne-Fighting Wash” or “Skin-Clearing Serum,” these had ingredient names instead—Niacinamide 10%, Glycolic Acid 7%, Salicylic Acid 2%. I was intrigued and a bit baffled by the concept of selling individual skincare ingredients rather than pre-made formulas. I double-checked the labels, half-expecting to find a long, hidden list of questionable ingredients. But no—what you saw was what you got.

At first, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. With no flashy marketing promises to guide me, I wasn’t sure where to start. So, I played it safe and grabbed their Daily Skincare Set, which included a cleanser, moisturizer, and serum—all for an unbelievably low price. I also picked up the Glycolic Acid 7% Toner, a few acne-focused products like the AHA 30% +BHA 2% Peeling Solution, a salicylic acid charcoal mask, and what would later become my holy grail: the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum.

When I tallied up my purchase, I was shocked. I’d spent only about $75—less than the cost of a single cleanser and moisturizer from Tula. As I walked out of Ulta, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism. Could such affordable products really be the answer after all these years?

Little did I know, my skincare journey was about to take a turn for the better.

Building My Skincare Routine: A Step-by-Step Transformation

Starting with my new lineup from The Ordinary, I turned to their website for guidance. Their straightforward instructions helped me craft a routine I could stick to, morning and night:

  • Cleanse: I began with the Squalane Cleanser, which not only gently cleanses the skin but also doubles as a makeup remover.
  • Tone: Next came the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, a mild exfoliant that preps the skin for better absorption of serums and moisturizers.
  • Treat: I applied the Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum, my holy grail for acne-prone skin, designed to minimize oil production and reduce blemishes.
  • Moisturize: I finished with the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 moisturizer, which left my skin hydrated and plump.

Once a week, I treated my skin to The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. This powerful exfoliating mask worked wonders on texture and dullness, though I made sure to use it sparingly to avoid irritation. On particularly dry days, I added the Hyaluronic Acid + B5 serum for an extra dose of moisture.

To round out my routine, I incorporated a relaxing gua sha massage. This ancient tool not only reduced puffiness but also claimed to stimulate lymphatic drainage, improve circulation, and enhance skin elasticity. While I initially started for relaxation, it quickly became a self-care ritual I looked forward to.

What These Ingredients Did for My Skin

Through research, I learned just how incredible each ingredient in my routine was:

  • Squalane: A lightweight hydrator that mimics the skin’s natural oils without clogging pores.
  • Glycolic Acid: An alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that gently exfoliates to reveal smoother, brighter skin.
  • Niacinamide: Known for reducing redness, balancing oil production, and improving skin texture.
  • Zinc: Calms inflammation and combats acne-causing bacteria.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A humectant that attracts moisture to the skin, keeping it plump and hydrated.

After just a few weeks of consistent use, the changes were undeniable. My once-persistent swollen pores and blemishes were replaced by smoother skin with smaller, less noticeable pores. I was amazed to see my skin clear up so dramatically, but I still wasn’t fully satisfied with the sebum-filled pores that lingered.

The Final Touch: Pore Spatula
To tackle those stubborn pores that seem to get clogged every other day, I added a pore cleansing spatula to my routine. Its gentle vibrations help draw out impurities from my pores, leaving my skin feeling deeply cleansed and refreshed. The added benefit of face scraping, similar to gua sha, intrigues me—it’s said to promote facial sculpting over time, though I’m still exploring those results. Using this tool feels luxurious and a little magical, elevating my skincare game to new heights.

I used to rely on pore strips, but I’ve since learned they’re not the best option for my skin. Aside from being expensive and wasteful, pore strips can actually damage your pores over time by pulling at the skin and causing irritation. Switching to the pore-cleansing spatula feels like a more sustainable and skin-friendly alternative that delivers better (still satisfying) results without the downsides.

With this final addition, my skin had never looked better. Almost flawless, it’s smooth, clear, and glowing. It’s incredible to think how far I’ve come from the days of avoiding mirrors and cameras to now feeling confident in my own skin, even without makeup.

And of course, I wouldn’t expect you to believe me if I didn’t include a classice before-and-after:

Bonus: My Secret Weapon for Bright Eyes

While I’ve kept my skincare routine simple, there’s one extra product I can’t live without: Tula’s Rose Glow & Get It Eye Balm. It’s my go-to for no-makeup days when I still want to look awake and refreshed. The balm gives a subtle rose-tinted glow that brightens up my under-eyes while delivering a cooling, minty sensation that feels amazing on the skin. With caffeine to depuff and energize, it’s perfect for those mornings when I need a little extra help to look bright-eyed and ready to take on the day. It’s skincare meets instant confidence—what’s not to love?

Finding What Works for You

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my skincare journey, it’s that everyone’s skin is unique. What works for me might not be the perfect fit for someone else—but I genuinely believe that The Ordinary has something for everyone. After years of trial and error, I’ve become convinced that simplicity is best.

So many skincare brands use buzzword ingredients to lure you in, but they often pack their products with overly complicated formulas, unnecessary oils, and irritants that do more harm than good. The Ordinary strips all of that away, focusing on high-quality, single-ingredient solutions that allow you to customize a routine based on your skin’s needs.

While I’ve linked most of the products I use throughout this page, for the easiest experience, you can shop my Amazon storefront. Sometimes links break and I can’t always replace them, so this is the easiest way to find my most up-to-date products for allllll the things.

For the record, I’m not sponsored by The Ordinary—this is just my honest experience. If you’ve been struggling to find good skincare, I’d highly recommend giving them a try. It’s affordable, effective, and has completely changed how I feel about my skin. Your perfect routine might take some experimenting, but I hope my journey inspires you to keep going. Clear, happy skin is worth it!
