The 10 Essentials You Need to Start Your Wellness Journey

The 10 essentials you need to start your wellness journey

Starting your wellness journey can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools, you can create a strong foundation and set yourself up for success. In this post, I’ll share the 10 essentials you need to start feeling your best—no gimmicks, just practical items that truly make a difference. Ready to begin? Let’s dive in!

Ready to Start Your Wellness Journey?

If you’re feeling called to start your wellness journey but don’t know where to begin, you’re not alone. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by wellness trends, contradicting advice, or that pressure to “do it all perfectly.” But the truth? Your wellness journey should support you—not stress you out.

When I was first starting out, I could barely cook more than a box of pasta. I couldn’t run for more than 20 seconds without gasping for air. I was terrified to step foot in a gym. Everything about wellness felt foreign—like I didn’t belong there. But what helped the most was starting small and building a strong foundation that I could grow from.

This post isn’t a list of my all-time favorite products—it’s a toolkit. These 10 wellness essentials are meant to give you a solid baseline as you begin your journey. They’re accessible, low-pressure, and supportive of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. You can always build from here, but these tools are a powerful starting place.

And yes—they’re all available on Amazon, because convenience is wellness sometimes.

The 10 Best Tools for Starting Your Wellness Journey

These tools aren’t handpicked because they’re trendy—they’re your foundational building blocks. With these, you’ll be able to lay the groundwork for a strong, sustainable wellness journey. You can always build and customize as you go, but these essentials will help you start strong.

1. A Guided Wellness Journal or Workbook

Starting your wellness journey is not just about physical changes—it’s also about cultivating a healthy mindset. A wellness journal or workbook can help you focus your thoughts, track your progress, and reflect on your journey. It serves as a powerful tool for discovering new insights, setting goals, and nurturing your mental well-being. By writing, you create a dedicated space to process your thoughts, explore your feelings, and set intentions for the future.

When I first started my wellness journey, I was completely overwhelmed. I didn’t know where to begin and often felt like I was failing before I even started. I struggled to make time for myself, and every attempt to eat healthier felt like a chore. There were days when even a short walk felt too much, and I felt completely disconnected from my own body. But by journaling, I began to gain clarity. It helped me reflect on my goals, understand my habits, and prioritize the things that would have the biggest impact on my well-being. That’s why I created the Mind Body Whole Wellness Workbook—to offer a structured yet flexible approach to wellness for anyone just starting out.

The workbook includes over 100 writing prompts and a variety of activities designed to guide you through small, sustainable changes that are rooted in self-compassion. Whether it’s reflecting on your physical health, exploring emotional well-being, or learning how to integrate both, the workbook gives you practical tools for making lasting changes. By the end, you’ll not only have a stronger connection to your body but also a renewed sense of confidence and self-love.

You can find my Mind Body Whole Wellness Workbook here on Amazon to support your wellness journey and help you build healthier, more intentional habits.

Habit to try: Set aside time each day to complete one page spread from the workbook. Some days you might read helpful insights, other days you’ll engage in an activity, and sometimes you’ll reflect with journal prompts. Taking just a few minutes each day will help you stay on track with your wellness goals and create a space for meaningful self-reflection.

2. A Beautiful Water Bottle That You’ll Actually Use

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to improve your health, and having a water bottle that you love can make all the difference. While this may feel like a splurge, investing in a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing water bottle that suits your style and needs can motivate you to stay on track. After all, when you have a bottle that feels special to you, you’re much less likely to toss it in the back of a cabinet and forget about it.

If you’re a crystal girly, I absolutely love my crystal-infused glass water bottle. The idea of infusing your water with the energy of crystals can be a fun and empowering experience, plus the glass material keeps your water clean and pure. That said, I’ll be honest: it’s less practical for everyday use because it’s glass and can easily break, so it’s definitely a “treat yourself” kind of purchase.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more durable and practical, I recommend a heavy-duty cute plastic water bottle that also keeps you motivated to drink more water. Not only is this one sturdy, but it also comes in several colors to match your aesthetic and mood, making hydration feel like less of a chore. Plus, with its large capacity, it makes it easier to track how much water you’re drinking throughout the day.

Habit to try: Start by setting a goal to drink a certain amount of water each day, and keep your bottle within sight. Fill it up every few hours, and before you know it, staying hydrated will become second nature.

3. A Bento-Style Lunchbox for Balanced Meals

When you’re starting your wellness journey, one of the most important things you can do is focus on nourishing your body with balanced meals. However, meal prep can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of grabbing whatever is most convenient (usually not the healthiest option). That’s where a bento box comes in handy—it’s a simple and effective way to pack nutritious meals for your day while keeping portions controlled and foods neatly organized.

A bento box helps you plan your meals ahead of time, and it’s the perfect way to ensure you’re getting a variety of nutrients throughout the day. It also allows you to easily incorporate healthy snacks and meals that are both delicious and satisfying, helping you avoid the temptation of quick, unhealthy choices.

I personally love the Bentgo Fresh Lunchbox because it has multiple compartments, allowing me to pack everything from salads to grains and fruits without worrying about cross-contamination. Plus, it’s compact and easy to carry, making it a great option for anyone with a busy schedule. Another option I recommend is the Bentgo Classic Lunchbox, which is slightly larger and offers even more space for your meals and snacks. Both of these lunchboxes are microwave and dishwasher safe, making them super convenient for daily use.

Habit to try: As you continue on your wellness journey, start planning your meals the night before or on the weekend to help ensure you have balanced, portion-controlled options throughout the week. These bento boxes can make meal prep easier, and you’ll feel more empowered to stick to your goals when your healthy meals are all packed and ready to go. Filling your bento with a variety of protein, veggies, and whole grains will help keep you energized and on track. And don’t forget the healthy fats!

4. A Yoga Mat (Not Just for Yoga)

When it comes to investing in equipment for your wellness journey, you don’t have to break the bank. A yoga mat is a great example of something that doesn’t need to be pricey to be effective. While there are many fancy options out there, I personally love the Gaiam’s Premium Yoga Mats priced just under $24, which is both affordable and durable. But one thing I highly recommend when selecting a yoga mat is to go with a thicker one—especially if you’re doing floor-based exercises like yoga, Pilates, or strength training. A thicker mat will provide better cushioning for your joints, particularly your wrists and knees, making your workouts more comfortable and reducing the risk of injury.

That said, yoga mats aren’t just for yoga! They can be used for all kinds of exercises, from bodyweight workouts to stretching, ab routines, or even light weightlifting. The mat provides a stable, non-slip surface to help with your form and prevent injuries during any workout routine. It’s a simple tool that adds versatility to your fitness plan.

For a great balance of comfort and quality, I recommend the Gaiam Yoga Mat. It’s 6mm thick, providing extra cushion, and has a non-slip surface for stability, making it perfect for a variety of workouts, not just yoga. Plus, it’s available in different colors and patterns, so you can find one that fits your style.

Habit to try: Spend 20-30 minutes on your mat every day, whether you’re doing an intense workout, just stretching out your muscles, or having a mindful moment. Taking a few minutes to sit or lie on your mat in stillness can help clear your mind, reduce stress, and ground you in the present. This simple practice can bring both physical and mental benefits, helping you stay connected to your wellness journey.

5. Resistance Bands or a Kettlebell

When you’re starting your wellness journey, it’s important to have a few key pieces of equipment that can grow with you as your fitness progresses. Resistance bands and an adjustable kettlebell are perfect examples of versatile tools that allow you to work multiple muscle groups with just one piece of equipment. Both of these options are compact, cost-effective, and can be used for a wide range of exercises, from strength training to mobility work.

Resistance bands are great for targeting specific muscle groups, improving flexibility, and even enhancing your stability. Whether you’re doing squats, lunges, or shoulder presses, bands can provide adjustable levels of resistance to help you build strength and endurance over time. They’re also lightweight and portable, making them perfect for home workouts or if you’re on the go. I recommend these Resistance Bands for a simple yet effective way to enhance your fitness routine.

If you prefer something a bit more dynamic, an adjustable kettlebell offers endless possibilities for full-body workouts. With the ability to change the weight depending on your fitness level, kettlebells are fantastic for exercises like swings, goblet squats, and kettlebell deadlifts. This Adjustable Kettlebell gives you the flexibility to start with a lighter weight and increase the intensity as you build strength, making it an excellent investment for anyone serious about strength training or high-intensity workouts.

Habit to try: Dedicate 15-20 minutes a few times a week to using resistance bands or your kettlebell. Incorporate exercises that target both upper and lower body to ensure you’re building strength evenly. Over time, these exercises will help increase your muscle tone and overall fitness level.

6. A Good Pair of Versatile Shoes

When it comes to workout gear, a good pair of shoes is essential—but the key is finding something versatile enough to handle different types of activities. Whether you’re running, walking, doing yoga, or lifting weights, you need shoes that provide support, comfort, and durability across a variety of exercises.

Personally, I love finding a shoe that not only performs well but also fits my style, and the Skechers Women’s Bobs Sport B Flex Flying Hi Sneaker is a perfect example of that balance. These sneakers are affordable at just $62 (or $48 on sale right now if you hurry!), come in a variety of adorable pastel colors, and are versatile enough for everything from light running and walking to strength training and casual everyday wear. The lightweight construction and flexible sole make them comfortable for a range of activities without sacrificing support. They’re the kind of shoes you’ll want to wear from your workout to running errands, and you won’t have to worry about changing your shoes for different activities.

These sneakers also have a slip-on design, which adds to their convenience—no need to fuss with laces before you head out for your workout. Plus, they come in a bunch of cute colors to fit your personal style, making them a fun addition to your fitness wardrobe.

Habit to try: Set a goal to walk or run for 20 minutes a few times a week, and gradually add strength or bodyweight exercises using your new shoes for support. With a comfortable and reliable pair of sneakers, you’ll feel motivated to move more—and the versatility means you can use them for various activities, making your fitness routine that much easier.

7. A Weighted Sleep Mask

Last Christmas, I got some really thoughtful gifts—but my all-time favorite ended up being one of the simplest: a really good weighted sleep mask. I didn’t expect it to change the game for me, but it absolutely did. Since I started using it, I’ve gotten some of the best sleep of my life. It blocks out light without feeling heavy or uncomfortable, and now I genuinely have a hard time falling asleep without it. It’s become a non-negotiable part of my nightly routine.

Getting quality rest is one of the most underrated wellness tools. Your body heals, resets, and restores while you sleep—and using a soft, contoured sleep mask can help you drift off faster and stay asleep longer, especially if you’re sensitive to light or have an inconsistent sleep schedule.

The one I love is lightweight, doesn’t press on my eyes, and stays in place all night. For how small and affordable it is, it’s had a massive impact on my overall wellbeing and energy levels.

Habit to try: Put on your sleep mask as part of a calming nighttime routine. Try dimming the lights, turning off screens at least 30 minutes before bed, and letting your body wind down naturally. You’ll be amazed at the difference better sleep can make on every other part of your wellness journey.

8. A Fitness Tracker (Like a Fitbit)

I plan to write a full article soon about why I love my Fitbit—but for now, I’ll say this: I’ve tried other trackers (Garmin, for example), and they just didn’t work for me. The functionality was clunky, and it didn’t feel intuitive or fun to use. Fitbit, on the other hand, strikes the perfect balance between performance and ease of use. It’s not overwhelming, but it gives you exactly what you need: movement reminders, heart rate tracking, sleep scores, active zone minutes, breathing and stress insights, and even mindfulness reminders.

If you’re an Apple user and already in the Apple ecosystem, you might lean toward the Apple Watch—but you’ll need a budget of around $600 to go that route. I honestly think Fitbit delivers so much value for the price and can be an amazing option whether you’re just starting out or fully in your fitness groove.

Here are three solid choices depending on your lifestyle and budget:

  • Fitbit Charge 6 – a fantastic entry-level fitness tracker with all the essentials, including heart rate monitoring, GPS, and workout tracking in a super sleek, minimal design.
  • Fitbit Versa 4 – a basic smartwatch that goes beyond the Charge with a larger display and added smart features like call, text, and calendar notifications, all while still focusing on your wellness.
  • Google Pixel Watch 3 – this is the one I currently use, and it’s the crème de la crème. It has all the Fitbit features built in plus gorgeous design, Google integration, and smart functionality. The only real downside? You’ll need to charge it more frequently than some of the others.

Habit to try: Set small daily goals on your tracker—like 8,000 steps, 30 active minutes, or consistent bedtime/wake time—and use the data to help you understand and support your body better. A tracker isn’t just about numbers; it’s about noticing patterns and becoming more mindful of how you feel day to day.

9. A Foam Roller for Recovery & Releasing Tension

Let’s be real—you’ll see tons of fancy foam rollers on the market with deep ridges and aggressive pressure points claiming to “get in deep.” But let me tell you from experience: when you lay your full body weight on one of those things, it can hurt. Personally, I much prefer a smooth or lightly textured roller that still gets the job done without making me dread it. I’ve been loving the Gaiam Compact Foam Roller—it’s simple, effective, and doesn’t take up much space.

Foam rolling is one of those sneaky wellness habits that makes a huge difference, especially if you’re sitting a lot, walking daily, or starting to work out more regularly. It helps relieve muscle tension, improves flexibility, supports recovery, and even boosts circulation. Plus, it just feels good to take a few minutes to check in with your body.

Habit to try: Spend 5–10 minutes foam rolling each day, especially after a workout or before bed to wind down. Focus on the areas that feel tight—calves, quads, back, and hips are great places to start. Think of it as a mini massage you can give yourself anytime.

10. A Story to Inspire You to Keep Going

Sometimes the right book finds you at the right time—and when it does, it can change everything.

The Alchemist is one of those books. It’s short, easy to read, and written in a simple, almost fable-like style—but don’t let that fool you. It’s one of the most impactful and beautiful stories I’ve ever read. It’s all about listening to your heart, following your purpose, and trusting the process, even when things don’t make sense yet. I love that it’s a short read because I can come back to this book again and again when I need a reminder to stay aligned with what truly matters.

Another one I’ll never stop recommending is The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown. If you’ve never read her work, she’s a shame researcher who dives deep into vulnerability, courage, and authenticity. As someone with a history of complex PTSD, her words helped me feel seen, safe, and inspired to live as my full self—not just the curated, “together” version. This book gave me permission to soften, to show up, and to stop chasing perfection. If you’re on a journey of self-discovery or healing, it’s a must.

Habit to try: Read a little bit before bed to wind down your eyes and give your brain a break from screens. It’s a small shift that can help you sleep better and end the day with intention.

Start Where You Are – And Keep Going

No matter where you’re starting from—whether you’re a total beginner or just looking for a little refresh—I hope these wellness essentials help you feel more supported, excited, and empowered on your journey. Remember, wellness isn’t about perfection or doing everything at once. It’s about finding what works for you, building small habits that add up, and being kind to yourself along the way.

If you try any of these favorites, I’d love to hear what you think. Share your experiences, your go-to products, or what’s made the biggest difference in your routine. And if you’re on Fitbit, let’s be friends and cheer each other on—send me your username and we’ll get some step challenges going.

Wishing you ease, joy, and lots of little wins on your wellness path. You’ve got this.
