For anyone who struggles with self-esteem, “self-love” can feel can feel elusive and artificial. Phrases such as “you can never truly love someone until you love yourself” circulate, making those who struggle with self-love feel aimless and alone.

For me, self-love has been a courageous journey of reflection, compassion, and hard truths. To love oneself is not to stroke the ego or gaze in the mirror of narcissism, nor is it to indulge in meaningless pleasures for the sake of short-term happiness. Today, let’s let go of misconceptions and discover the genuine path to self-love, empowering yourself with reflection, compassion, and embracing hard truths.

what is self-love?

Self-love means to treat yourself as you would your own child, beloved pet, or even your favorite plant: make sure they have what they need to be physically healthy, but also emotionally fulfilled and balanced. This notion is fundamental to establishing self-love, and often the first step. Just as you may want to cave in and let your child eat ice cream for dinner, or let your dog run out of your sight because they’re having the time of their lives, you know that you must nurture their wellbeing and keep them safe above all else. You must do the same for yourself, unconditionally.

If you don’t have a child, pet, or even a plant to nurture and care for, you might enjoy this life free from responsibility. But the fact remains that you’re still responsible for yourself. As much as society may encourage us to look to love and family to save us from life’s challenges and pain, it cannot do the heavy lifting for us.

The lonely, uncomfortable truth of life is that no one else is going to shut your eyes at a reasonable bedtime for you, exercise your body for you, physically restrain you from overindulging in alcohol or other drugs, or cope with your complex and most painful emotions for you. You are the only person with the power to do those things, and so you must.

Why It Matters

By now, you might be asking, “do I have to?

No. You don’t have to. But consider what will happen if you don’t begin to love yourself:

  1. Increased physical and mental health problems: Neglecting your physical and mental well-being can lead to a decline in overall health. This can include an increased risk of developing chronic conditions, weakened immune system, and higher susceptibility to stress, anxiety, and depression.
  2. Burnout and exhaustion: Ignoring self-care can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Constantly pushing yourself beyond your limits without taking time to recharge can result in a lack of energy, decreased productivity, and a general feeling of being overwhelmed.
  3. Strained relationships: Neglecting self-care can negatively impact your relationships with others. When you’re not prioritizing your own needs, you may find it difficult to give and receive support, leading to increased conflict and strained connections with loved ones.
  4. Decreased self-esteem and confidence: Neglecting self-care can undermine your self-esteem and confidence. Not taking the time to address your own needs and validate your emotions can result in feelings of worthlessness, self-doubt, and a negative self-image.
  5. Poor work performance and outcomes: Failing to take care of yourself can spill over into your work life. Lack of self-care can lead to decreased concentration, motivation, and creativity, resulting in lower productivity and overall job performance. This will limit your career prospects overall and make it much more difficult and unlikely that you may accomplish your goals and dreams.
  6. Substance abuse and addiction: People with low self-esteem, poor mental health, and weaker coping mechanisms for the stresses in life are more susceptible to addictions such as alcoholism, gambling, food addiction, pornography, and drugs. These addictions will further strain your relationships and support systems, putting wellness further from your reach.
  7. Limited personal growth: By neglecting self-care, you may limit your personal growth and development. Taking care of yourself allows you to explore your interests, pursue hobbies, and invest in your own self-improvement, which can lead to a sense of fulfillment and a more meaningful life.
  8. Low quality of life: All of these things, generally, will lead you to live a low quality of life. You may be alive, but to be lonely, unfulfilled, chronically stressed, and physically unwell is not to live life to its fullest potential.

Nurturing your self-esteem and self-love can be an arduous journey, especially if you deal with complex trauma or have never been taught healthy examples of love and support.

Increasing self-esteem and self-love is a process that requires commitment and self-reflection. It won’t always be easy, and sometimes you will take two steps forward and three steps back. Regardless, consistently weaving these practices into your life will help you start your journey towards nurturing your self-esteem and developing a deeper sense of self-love:

1. Acknowledge your worth

Recognize that you are deserving of love, respect, and compassion, just like anyone else. In case you haven’t been told, all humans are inherently valuable and deserving of love. You do not need to do anything or be any certain way to earn love, especially from yourself.

Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with positive affirmations that reinforce your value. Choose a few from the list below that resonate with your heart, write them down, and repeat them to yourself. You can do this in the mirror, when you first wake up, before you fall asleep, or when you are experiencing stress or anxiety.

  1. I am deserving of love and happiness.
  2. I accept and love myself unconditionally.
  3. I am enough just as I am.
  4. I embrace my flaws and imperfections as part of my uniqueness.
  5. I am worthy of all the good things that come my way.
  6. I trust myself to make the best decisions for my wellbeing.
  7. I release all negative self-judgment and replace it with kindness and compassion.
  8. I am proud of who I am and all that I have accomplished.
  9. I choose to focus on my strengths and celebrate my achievements.
  10. I am deserving of self-care and prioritize my physical and emotional well-being.
  11. I am grateful for the person I am becoming.
  12. I deserve to set boundaries and prioritize my needs.
  13. I am confident and believe in my abilities.
  14. I radiate love and kindness towards myself and others.
  15. I choose happiness and choose to let go of anything that no longer serves me.
  16. I trust in my own worthiness and embrace self-acceptance.
  17. I am open to receiving love and support from others.
  18. I forgive myself for past mistakes and grow from them.
  19. I have the power to create positive change in my life.
  20. I am worthy of love and respect from myself and others.

Remember to choose the affirmations that resonate with you personally, and repeat them regularly to reinforce a positive self-image and cultivate self-love.

2. Practice self-care

Self-care is a fundamental practice that involves deliberately taking care of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It’s about prioritizing and nurturing ourselves, recognizing that we cannot pour from an empty cup. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and seeking support from loved ones or therapists can help us process and manage our emotions effectively.

3. Mental Self-Care: Taking care of our mental health is vital for maintaining clarity and focus. It can include engaging in activities that stimulate our minds, such as reading, puzzles, or learning something new. Creating a healthy work-life balance, setting realistic goals, and managing stress are also crucial aspects of mental self-care.

4. Social Self-Care: Nurturing positive relationships and social connections contributes to our overall well-being. Engaging in social activities, spending quality time with loved ones, and seeking support from a supportive community are essential for building strong social connections and fostering a sense of belonging.

5. Spiritual Self-Care: Caring for our spiritual well-being involves nurturing our values, beliefs, and personal growth. Engaging in practices that align with our spirituality, such as meditation, prayer, or reflection, can help cultivate a sense of inner peace, purpose, and fulfillment.

3. Replace shame with gratitude

Replacing shame with gratitude is a powerful step towards nurturing self-esteem and cultivating self-love. Shame has a way of holding us back, making us feel unworthy and undeserving. But by shifting our mindset and embracing gratitude, we can break free from the clutches of shame and open ourselves up to a world of positivity and self-acceptance.
