are dogs the new babies?

my dog is my baby

I mean, just look at that little sweet face. It’s a sentiment shared by many dog owners. Simultaneously, Millennials and Gen Z are choosing to have less kids than previous generations. Which begs the question: are dogs the new babies?

As society shifts, so do our priorities. While previous generations might have placed more emphasis on advancing their careers or raising families, the current generation is placing a greater value on wellness and experiences. And what better way to care for our wellness and get more experiences than by welcoming a four-legged best friend into your home?

With the rise of social media, it’s easy to see how our obsession with dogs has flourished. From hashtags like #dogsofinstagram to dedicated accounts for specific breeds, dogs have become some of our favorite influencers. We dress them up in cute outfits, take them on adventures, and shower them with affection, just as we would with our own children. They provide us with endless entertainment, companionship, and unconditional love around the clock.

It’s not unheard of these days to see people pushing strollers with their small furry friends aboard. Doggie daycare, luxury pet hotels, and even doggy birthday parties have become increasingly popular.

But there’s more to it than just entertainment. Owning a dog could actually have positive effects on our health. Studies have shown that owning a dog can boost our mental and physical health, reduce stress and anxiety, and even increase our life expectancy. In many ways, dogs have become our closest companions and play an integral role in our daily lives. The emotional support they provide is unmatched, making them ideal companions especially for those dealing with anxiety or depression.

My dog forces me to get outside and get exercise each and every day, even when there’s nothing else I’d rather do less. In the moments when I’m glued to the TV or my phone screen, he’s always there to remind me to live in the moment, run around with him, or just go smell the fresh air.

but, I still want babies

As much as we love our dogs, it’s understandable to still want babies, as they come with a unique bond and experience that can’t be replicated by a fur baby. Even so, owning a dog can actually prepare you for parenthood in some ways. Dogs require similar responsibilities such as feeding, training, and exercising, which can help you develop valuable skills that will come in handy when raising a child.

While dogs do require attention and care, they are still fundamentally different from human infants. Dogs will never grow up to become independent adults, for example. And while dogs can bring great joy and love into our lives, they also come with challenges that are unique to their species. The most important skill I’ve gained from raising my pup is PATIENCE!

Leave it, no, uh uh, leave it!!!!

Not to mention, my furry baby will only be in my life for a short time compared to the human lifespan. Though I do wish I could keep him around forever.

Raising our puppy was also great practice for my partner and I to get a sense of our parenting styles. I learned really quickly that he’s gonna be the fun dad and take our kids on all sorts of adventures, and I’m in charge of discipline and structure. This allowed us to have some key conversations on our philosophies and communicate how we need additional support before any little humans were involved.

babies aren’t for everyone

It’s no secret that babies aren’t for everyone. #ChildFreeByChoice is a growing movement aiming to break the stigma around couples, and especially women, who choose not to have children. For generations, having kids was just seen as what you do. Today, with the rising cost of living, the threat of climate change, and economic uncertainty, many people are beginning to see having children as irresponsible, or simply not for them.

And that’s okay! The truth is, we need just as many people with the resources, time, and energy to support the next generation of parents as we do parents. We all know “it takes a village,” but we also live more isolated now than ever. Whether choosing to procreate or not, it’s so important to find time and space for community in our lives so we can support each other’s livelihoods.

Not to mention, infertility is on the rise across the world. For those who want to be parents, but can’t conceive a child, the pain is unbearable. Adoption and IVF are difficult and stressful processes, and in the meantime, our dogs are there to kiss away our tears and make our families that much bigger, more full of love, and much fuzzier.

we still need new little humans

The way I see it, no matter how great the uncertainty or how looming the threat, we will always need a new generation of smart, well-adjusted humans to carry the next generation and solve the world’s problems. The best thing we can do today is raise our children with tons of love and care so that they may prosper.

And yet, the question remains: are dogs the new babies? While they may not replace human babies in every sense, they certainly provide us with many of the same benefits. In a world full of screens and distractions, dogs remind us of the importance of living in the moment and cherishing the simple things in life. While we may consider our furry friends as our “fur babies,” they cannot replace the experience of raising and nurturing human children. The love and bond between a parent and child is unique and irreplaceable, and there is nothing quite like the joy of watching your child grow and discover the world.

Whether you’re a new puppy parent or a seasoned pet lover, there’s no denying the love and joy that dogs bring to our lives. It’s up to each of us to decide what brings our lives joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s raising a human family or a pack of pups, the most important thing is to share and cherish all the love that surrounds us.
