How to Protect and Prioritize Your Peace

Learn to protect and prioritize your own peace by exploring a personal narrative that resonates with the shared commitment to finding calm amidst life’s complexities.

Living in Chaos

I did not grow up in a peaceful home. Almost every day, there was infighting between my mom, sister and I, and we all struggled with some form of mental illness or another, constantly clashing needs and priorities. When your family lives in survival mode, the idea of peace can feel like a distant dream. Maybe once in awhile you’d carve out an hour for a nice, long bath or to read a book. But most of the time, you feel like you’re running on a hamster wheel- finding your next meal, going to work, paying bills, and maybe getting a wink of sleep at night.

My mom grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, so naturally, she has a little peace sign tattooed on her shoulder. I always associated peace with war and politics, and I looked to the outside world to determine how my inner world could be. As I grew older and got increasingly interested in political science and current events, I realized that we strayed further and further from peace every single day as a collective. It was disheartening, stressful, and it felt hopeless.

Taking My Power Back

Finally, it dawned on me that waiting for the world to change was an exercise in futility. The constant barrage of disheartening news and the seemingly insurmountable global challenges left me feeling overwhelmed and powerless. It was at that moment of realization that I understood—I needed to take my peace into my own hands.

The world might remain chaotic and unpredictable, but I had the agency to shape my internal landscape. Instead of futilely attempting to change the vast complexities of the external world, I redirected my focus inward. I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and introspection, understanding that true peace begins within oneself. It wasn’t a means to escape the reality around me; it was a way to navigate those realities with resilience and tranquility. In choosing to change myself, I found the path to peace that had eluded me for so long.

As we begin to understand peace, we must also recognize why safeguarding and prioritizing it is our responsibility to ourselves. Let’s explore the importance of protecting and prioritizing our peace in a world that often challenges its very essence.

what is peace?

Peace, to me, is not just a serene absence of conflict, but a dynamic and intentional state of being. It’s about finding harmony within oneself and with the world, even amidst the chaos that surrounds us. Peace isn’t a passive condition; it’s an active choice to embrace tranquility, compassion, and understanding. It goes beyond the quietude of a moment; it involves a continuous process of self-discovery, acceptance, and growth.

In essence, peace is the ability to navigate life’s complexities with a calm and centered mind. It’s the realization that while we may not have control over external circumstances, we have the power to shape our internal landscape, cultivating a sense of peace that becomes our guiding force in life.

how to make peace your priority

As I reflect on my personal journey of prioritizing peace, I’ve come to realize that it’s not merely a set of actions but a profound shift in mindset—a deliberate choice to navigate life’s intricacies with tranquility rather than succumbing to the default chaos within our world. This transformation involves a deeper level of introspection and practice of principles that gradually become one’s way of life.

First and foremost, to protect and prioritize your peace begins with a recognition that you are deserving of peace, and to find and safeguard your own sense of calm is not selfish, but necessary. We live in a world that constantly tells us to put our own needs last for the sake of others’ comfort. This leads to the common suppression of our own emotional needs, which can have a lasting and devastating impact on our overall mental and emotional health.

It’s up to you to decide that your peace is a priority, and it is worth protecting. I’ve made the choice, and I’d love to share how I am getting closer to lasting peace and contentment with each passing day.

The Key Tenants to Protect and Prioritize Your Peace

Here are a few of the key tenants I’ve identified on how to prioritize your peace:

  1. Mindfulness and Self-Awareness: Mindfulness is a way of living and engaging with the world. In moments of stress or uncertainty, I’ve learned to pause and bring my awareness to the present. This practice extends beyond the meditation cushion to the choices I make daily. By understanding the patterns of my thoughts and reactions, I’ve gained the power to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. It’s an ongoing journey of self-discovery that requires patience and the willingness to confront uncomfortable truths about oneself.
  2. Setting Boundaries with External Influences: Creating and holding boundaries is a declaration of self-respect. It’s a realization that my mental and emotional well-being are sacred, and I have the agency to protect them. Setting boundaries has meant learning to discern which external influences contribute positively to my life and which ones drain my energy. This process involves acknowledging that it’s okay to say no, to step back, and to prioritize my own peace over the demands of a constantly buzzing world.
  3. Cultivating Positive Habits: Positive habits aren’t just routines; they’re intentional choices aimed at fostering a positive and peaceful mindset. Incorporating these habits takes commitment and practice. Engaging in activities that bring joy isn’t a luxury but a necessity for maintaining a sense of balance. It’s about recognizing that these habits are not indulgences but investments in mental and emotional well-being.
  4. Gratitude as a Daily Practice: Gratitude, as a key tenet, is about infusing gratitude into daily life, appreciating the small moments, and finding joy in the ordinary. By consistently acknowledging the positive aspects of life, gratitude becomes a transformative force that reframes perspectives and anchors one in a sense of abundance.
  5. Embracing Change with Resilience: Prioritizing peace requires embracing change as a constant in life. Developing resilience becomes crucial in navigating uncertainties. It involves cultivating adaptability, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth, and understanding that the only constant is change. Resilience becomes a shield that protects the inner peace during life’s inevitable fluctuations.

To protect and prioritize peace over conflict and stress is a personal choice that requires ongoing practice and commitment. It’s acknowledging that, amidst life’s challenges, I have the power to choose my response. Peace is not a passive state; it’s an active, daily practice that unfolds through conscious choice and commitment to ourselves.

closing thoughts

Growing up amidst daily infighting and mental health struggles, peace felt like an unattainable dream in my survival-focused home. The realization struck that waiting for the world to change was futile, prompting me to reclaim control over my own peace. In redirecting my focus inward, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, understanding that true peace starts from within.

The key tenets to prioritizing peace, including mindfulness, setting boundaries, and cultivating positive habits, became transformative principles in my life. Recognizing that peace is an active, daily practice, I embraced the power to choose my response amidst life’s challenges.

In defining peace as a dynamic state of being, I found solace in navigating life’s complexities with tranquility. Making peace a priority is an intentional choice—a continuous, conscious practice that shapes a harmonious internal landscape. This unfolds through deliberate choice and a steadfast commitment to protect and prioritize peace as a responsibility to ourselves. I hope this realization and mindset shift can help you find more peace in your life.
