Anyone who knows me knows I’m a soup girlie. If it weren’t for the peer pressure of modern society, I would eat soup every week regardless of the season or the temperature. I don’t care that it was 100 degrees out today, do you want to try this soup I made?
Because I can’t always be in the kitchen crafting a new soup recipe, sometimes I have to satisfy my cravings for warm, rich comfort elsewhere. And where better to do that than to pour a cup of bone broth for sipping? Not only that, but I also use bone broth when cooking all sorts of things. From boiling my pasta in it, adding to sauce or gravy, deglazing a pan, and of course, as a base for the soup of the week – bone broth is endlessly versatile.
In this article, I’ll share with you why I can’t get enough of bone broth, provide you with a simple recipe to make it yourself, highlight its amazing health benefits, and reveal where to find it for a fraction of the price.
The Magic of Bone Broth
If you’re a soup enthusiast like me, you probably understand the comforting and nourishing power of a steaming bowl of soup. But have you ever experienced the magic of bone broth? Let me take you on a journey through the incredible qualities that make bone broth such a special ingredient.
Rich Flavor: One of the first things you’ll notice about bone broth is its deep and savory flavor. This magical elixir is derived from simmering bones, along with herbs, vegetables, and spices over an extended period. The result is a broth that’s packed with richness and complexity, elevating any dish it touches. From soups and stews to gravies and sauces, the addition of bone broth takes your culinary creations to new and delicious heights.
Versatility: Bone broth is not just a liquid for sipping or as a base for soups; it’s incredibly versatile. This golden treasure can be used as a secret ingredient in a wide array of recipes. Whether you’re boiling your pasta in it, deglazing a pan, or adding it to your favorite sauces, bone broth adds depth and richness to any dish. Its flavor profile complements a variety of ingredients, allowing you to unleash your creativity in the kitchen.
Gut Healing: One of the main reasons I adore bone broth is its healing properties for the gut. It contains an abundance of amino acids like glutamine and glycine, which are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. These amino acids help to repair and strengthen the gut lining, reducing inflammation and promoting better digestion. Incorporating bone broth into your diet can contribute to a happier and healthier gut.
Collagen Boost: Another enchanting aspect of bone broth is its high collagen content. Collagen is a protein that supports skin health, joint function, and overall vitality. Regularly consuming bone broth may improve skin elasticity, reduce joint pain, and promote healthy hair and nails. It’s like a natural beauty elixir that nourishes your body from the inside out.
Protein-Packed: Bone broth is not only a comforting and delicious addition to your diet but also a fantastic source of high-quality protein. The simmering process extracts collagen and amino acids from the bones, creating a protein-rich elixir. Protein is an essential macronutrient that plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Consuming bone broth regularly can help support muscle growth and repair, enhance satiety, and aid in weight management.
Boosts Immunity: The nutrients and minerals present in bone broth, such as zinc, selenium, and vitamins A and C, help support a healthy immune system. This can be especially beneficial during the colder months when our immune systems may need an extra boost.
Nutrient-Rich: Bone broth is not only about flavor and healing properties; it’s also a powerhouse of nutrients. As the bones simmer, they release essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium into the broth. These minerals are easily absorbed by the body, helping to support bone health, boost the immune system, and support healthy functioning and optimal wellness.
Whether you’re looking to build lean muscle, maintain a healthy weight, or improve overall well-being, incorporating bone broth into your diet can provide you with the high protein content and numerous benefits necessary for a thriving and balanced lifestyle.
Making Bone Broth at Home
Now that you understand the allure of bone broth, let me guide you through the simple process of making it at home:
Ingredients:
- High-quality bones (beef, chicken, or fish)
- Water
- Vegetables (carrots, onions, celery)
- Herbs and spices (bay leaves, peppercorns, thyme)
- Apple cider vinegar (optional, helps extract minerals from the bones)
Instructions:
- Place the bones, vegetables, herbs, and spices in a large stockpot.
- Fill the pot with enough water to cover the ingredients.
- If using apple cider vinegar, add it to the pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.
- Simmer, partially covered, for at least 6 hours, but preferably up to 24 hours for maximum flavor and nutrient extraction.
- Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface during simmering.
- After simmering, strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any solids.
- Allow the broth to cool before storing it in the refrigerator or freezing it for later use.
Finding Bone Broth for Less
If you’re not up for making your own bone broth, there are still affordable options available:
- Local Farmers and Butchers: Check with your local farmers’ market or butcher shop as they may offer high-quality bones for making bone broth at a reasonable price.
- Online Retailers: Many online retailers now offer bone broth products that can be shipped directly to your door. Look for reputable brands that use organic, grass-fed bones for the best quality. My favorite? THIS delicious and convenient powdered bone broth from Bare Bones.
- Stock Up During Sales: Keep an eye out for sales and discounts at your local grocery stores or online retailers. Stocking up when bone broth is on sale can help you save money while enjoying the benefits.
- When in doubt, go to Walmart or buy in bulk: My regular grocery store sells bone broth for close to $6 for a regular 32 oz carton, but Walmart offers the same product for half the price. Of course, this depends a lot on your location, but when in doubt, a bulk option like Costco or Sam’s Club is sure to save you a lot of money.
